<image:caption>Next, we visited the snake exhibit, where we learned about the different species of snakes that are native to Mexico and saw them up close in their enclosures. For anyone who is not familiar with our monthly quests: Each month, we pick four challenges for our family (Quests) that we let our Patreon Community vote on. This month, Our Tiny Adventure Family challenged us all to hold a snake, which we were able to fulfill at CrocoCun Zoo. It was wonderful to see Sammy and Sawyer overcome their fears and was a great opportunity to tell the kids that Joey (aka “Daddy”) used to have a pet snake when we met. :)</image:caption>

<image:caption>My most memorable moment from our visit was the opportunity to meet and interact with the famous Mexican Hairless Dogs during our visit The Mexican Hairless Dog, also known as the Xoloitzcuintli, was highly revered by the Mayan ancestors of Mexico. In Mayan mythology, the Xolo was believed to have been a gift from the gods and was considered to have healing powers. The Mayans believed that the Xolo had the ability to ward off evil spirits and intruders, and would often keep the dogs in their homes for protection. The Xolo was also used in religious ceremonies and was sometimes sacrificed as an offering to the gods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our guided tour of the zoo began with a visit to the crocodile exhibit, where we saw dozens of these fearsome creatures basking in the sun and gliding through the water. Our knowledgeable guide gave us a fascinating overview of the crocodiles' anatomy, behavior, and habitat, and we even had the opportunity to touch the scaly skin of a young crocodile. It was an experience we will never forget!</image:caption>

The staff was patient, friendly, and knowledgeable, and we felt completely safe and comfortable throughout the animal encounters. And a great surprise at the end of our visit was the wonderful playground that Sammy and Sawyer were excited to play on, before we headed over to the cafe to eat some delicious sandwiches and drink some fresh strawberry lemonade and finish an amazing lunch with refreshing ice cream.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of our favorite things to do locally, is go to a family farm that’s open to the public. Uncle Donald’s Farm is located in Lady Lake, Florida and is like a mini-zoo. If you’ve ever been to a family farm, you’ll know exactly what to expect. If not, you’re in for a treat! You can feed a lot of the animals there like the sheep, goats, chickens, and ducks. They also have a hay ride where you can feed the cows! There is an area with other wildlife you can check out too that includes a Cougar, Deer, Tortoises, and other exotic animals.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When the weather is a little cooler, we recommend heading over to Dade City where you can check out Snowcat Ridge! Flordia’s only Alpine Snowpark. The kids loved this place. We had a lot of fun in the Artic Igloo and on the Snowy Slopes. The Family Snow Tubing was a blast. Your tickets get you access to the slopes for two hours or you can upgrade and get unlimited rides all day. They have food trucks on-site where you can have a nice lunch in the covered eating areas and watch everyone on the slopes. There is also an ice skating rink you can check out.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you get a chance, be sure to visit one of the local Air Boat tours. We went to Tom & Jerry’s Airboat Tours and had so much fun! We booked an early tour, or so we thought, but it seems booking the very first tour may be your best chance of seeing the alligators. The tour guide said the gators were out a lot more in the morning compared to when we went, but we still had a lot of fun and got to see a couple alligators. Both kids fell asleep on the way back to the dock, something about the hum and vibration from the boat I think. It was a great experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking: New York City On A Budget</image:title>
<image:caption>New York has soooo much to do and explore, it is impossible to see and do it all. To make the most of your time in the Big Apple, prioritize your activities based on your interests. If you are a foodie, plan your daily activities based on the restaurants you definitely want to try. If you are a tv fanatic, you can attend some of the talk shows that are being filmed in New York, such as The Tonight Show, David Letterman, SNL, Dr Oz, Jerry Springer, The View, Good Morning America. Tickets are usually free and talk shows are filmed daily. If you love art and/or history, you have a lot of great museums and historical sights available in NYC.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking: New York City On A Budget</image:title>
<image:caption>In New York, we did not rent a car, but instead just used their widely available network of public transportation, including buses and the subway. Note that the majority of buses and subways require you to have a NYC MetroCard to be able to enter the bus/subway. We landed in LaGuardia and were able to locate a MetroCard vending machine where you can buy a card for $1. However, we were not able to add money to the card through the machine and had to find a vendor at the airport that sold prepaid MetroCards with a balance on them already. The larger machines accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards. The small MetroCard Vending Machines are for credit cards and debit cards only; they do not accept cash.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking: New York City On A Budget - New York City can get expensive pretty quick, especially when it comes to accommodation. Mid-range hotel rooms can easily cost $200+ per night near Times Square, which is not very budget-friendly. So we decided to use our accumulated Marriott points that we received as a sign-on bonus from the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card after meeting the minimum spending requirement.</image:title>
<image:caption>Unfortunately, we did not have enough points to get a hotel in Manhattan, so I expanded the search and sorted in by distance to Times Square and then looked through the results to see which options would have a quick public transportation transit. After reviewing the options, we ended up booking a room at the Courtyard Lyndhurst Meadowlands in New Jersey, a short 20 minute bus ride to the Port Authority Bus Terminal right in Manhattan. The hotel room normally costs $167 per night, so for 3 nights that would have been $501. We ended redeeming a total of 45,000 Marriott and had to pay zero dollars.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking to Costa Rica - What didn't help was that I had been looking up the weather and temperature in San Jose, because I didn't know the tree house was actually 300 - 400 meters higher in elevation than the city, where the weather was much cooler; we only brought t-shirts and tops and we were quite cold after 5 pm as soon as the sun went down, so make sure to take something warm with you as well if you are traveling to those parts of Costa Rica.</image:title>
<image:caption>The couple that owns the property is in their 70's and they are such sweet people and were such a pleasure to meet and learn from! They made this trip even more great and were very helpful in helping us navigate and plan. If you ever plan on visiting Costa Rica and you don't need a large, luxurious space, we would highly recommend this tree house.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking to Costa Rica - The tree house we stayed in was located in the hills of San José, particularly Escazú. The tree house itself was an interesting experience and I would only recommend it to people who have the right expectations and are fine to be out in nature.</image:title>
<image:caption>This tree house was not a 'resort' or built for guests, it is a tree house located on a couple's property that was built by the man living there for his 5 year old grandson; it is not 'sealed', so occasionally you will find some guests inside including crickets, spiders, and other insects. Luckily the tree house is located at about 1400 meters above sea level, so at least you don't have to worry about pesky mosquitoes. If you are a nature lover, this could be the perfect place for you!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking to Costa Rica - One thing you can unfortunately not avoid is to pay the departure tax when leaving San Jose. Before you will be able to check-in, you will be required to pay a $29.00 per person departure tax; when you enter the airport, turn right and walk all the way to the end of the airport and on your right-hand side the main counter (for you to pay the tax) is located. We only waited about 5 minutes in line as it moves pretty quick.</image:title>
<image:caption>The departure tax can be paid in U.S. Dollars, Costa Rican Colones, or a combination of both. This is the perfect chance to get rid of any colones you still have left and pay the remaining difference in U.S. Dollars. The workers at the counter were very friendly; I just gave them my remaining colones, they counted them and then let me know how many U.S. Dollars I still owe them. I ended up having enough to cover one person's fee entirely plus a little bit of the second one, so I only had to pay $24 after getting rid of my remaining Colones.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Travel Hacking to Costa Rica - Things to do in San Jose</image:title>
<image:caption>For us, this was a relaxing trip, we mostly just explored the area and the hills around the property and went on a couple of hikes and also ventured back out into the city with the help of a compass :) Costa Rica is however known for its many volcanoes, for lots of outdoor activities you can choose from, including zip lining, 4-wheeling, white water rafting, and more, so if you are planning a trip to Costa Rica and would like to know where to go and what to do, I would recommend this great guide: Fodor's Essential Costa Rica.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I certainly would have never been able to learn and understand these things if I would have been closed minded and immediately dismissed and judged how certain situations are handled and how life is lived (on so many levels) – but in conclusion, once I put all the pieces together and when I imagined myself living in those type of conditions with those type of resources they are living with, it actually made sense to me. It was also only then, when things started feeling normal, and I didn’t take things personal or felt any longer that they wrong, inappropriate, or weird. Those moments that you can emerge into a different part of the world, into different culture, for me are the most precious moments of travel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>4. Round the World Trip It is interesting to see people's reaction when you tell them that you are planning a trip around the world. Most have this dream at some point in their lives, but often dismiss it because they think it is impossible. I am here to tell you that it is possible: No you do not have to be rich, but yes it will require major changes and big decisions and a lot of planning.</image:caption>

<image:caption>9. Go skiing or snow boarding While I have never tried snow boarding as of yet, I have been skiing numerous times and I have always had a blast. It helped that as part of the sports program in my high school in Germany, we were required to participate in a school trip to Austria where we learned how to ski in a 2-week intensive program. Skiing is a great thing to do and share with friends and family - if you have not yet learned how to ski, I would highly recommend in having at least one day training with a ski instructor as they can show you the basic do's and don'ts and help you develop the basic skills to make skiing fun.</image:caption>

Hot Air Balloon Ride This is something I cannot wait to do - a few years ago, Joey and I went to Vegas and I had an opportunity to fulfill this bucket list activity with a fantastic Travelzoo deal. However, this is something I do not necessarily plan to do twice, so I wanted it to be a great, fulfilling memory - considering the temperature in Vegas was in the 40's, we decided to save this for another, warmer time. ;)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Opportunities To Make A Difference In This World While Traveling</image:title>
<image:caption>After two weeks, it is interesting to look back now and read over this ourselves and see how our perspective had changed after such a short period of time. One does not necessarily need to travel for an extended period of time to get immersed into a different culture and a different way of life. During our team we were able to experience some of the greatest things we have ever done in life, build some of the strongest and most transparent friendships, and on the other hand also saw some of the harshest conditions people have to live in; we even had the opportunity to go on Social Reality Tour and visit with someone who is HIV positive and lost their husband to HIV and see how their life is affected by this unfortunate situation. And as luck had it, the annual Kilimanjaro Marathon took place toward the end of our time there and it was so great to be able to participate and take some of the kids from the orphanage along (read more and view photos here).</image:caption>

<image:caption>We stayed in the 'El Coqui' unit, which is kind of set up like a small studio apartment with a queen bed in the main living space, a kitchenette with a coffee maker, refrigerator, counter and cabinet space, and a small bathroom with the toilet and shower sharing the same space (which was probably my least favorite part of the unit, but manageable). There is free wi-fi accessible from the room or the courtyard and a flat screen tv in the room as well, which is practical, because as we learned, the weather can change quickly and you may end up spending the evening in the room, so at least you have some form of entertainment during those times.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The guesthouse is in a semi-gated community, which gave me a sense of security. It is located in the residential area of Condado, so you have an opportunity to experience the real Puerto Rico, live among the locals, with a few local shops and restaurants in walking distance. The property itself was very cute with a tiki-style decorated walkway that leads to a nice courtyard, where you can enjoy the breeze in the evening and play some cards or other games and socialize. My favorite part about the guesthouse though was the Jacuzzi on site.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I also had my husband start playing MyVegas (though on a much more irregular basis) and we had just over 67,000 points in his account by November 2014. I had planned out how to exactly all of our golden points on this trip so we wouldn’t pay for the hotel nor the food and have lots of activities reserved; however on the day I was ready to redeem, I came across the fine print, which limits you to 3 or 4 redemptions within a 30 day period – there went my initial plan. However, we were still able to save quite a bit of money on our hotel, some food, and activities and make this trip possible using these points. We reserved 3 nights at the Monte Carlo Hotel on the strip with the points on my account: It cost 80,000 to redeem for the Saturday night hotel room and 30,000 points for Sunday and Monday night each, for a total of 140,000 points used to book the 3 nights for a nice king-size bed room with a beautiful strip view.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We booked award travel with Spirit Airlines – I know some of you hate even the thought of it, but for those kind of savings, I’ll fly Spirit anytime and these may be some of the small sacrifices or trade-offs you will have to make sometimes to keep your travel costs low. If you would like to know which credit cards we got, how much we had to spend, how we reached the spending limit, and how we collected all the points, open the toggle box: Our plan from August on was to travel to Vegas in early to mid-December to get out of the Florida heat and into the cooler weather and Christmas spirit. But at that point I did not know whether we would be able to ‘collect’ enough miles in time to make this happen.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - All About Our First Travel Hacked Trip And How We Saved $1,023.88</image:title>
<image:caption>My plan was to purchase bus transportation from the LAS airport to our hotel and back, so we wouldn’t have to rent a car or spend money on a taxi. After doing a little bit of research I found that Bookit.com had the best option at $13 per person ($26 + tax for 2 people) for a round trip bus transfer. I purposely waited until my bonus miles had posted on my Barclaycard and was so excited to make my first redemption that I went on to book the bus transfer ….. and I used the wrong credit card. Can you believe it?! So instead of being able to redeem 2,808 miles for the bus transfer, I actually had to pay for it. Lesson learned – now I always tripe check which card I am using before I make any transaction. Other than the transportation from and to the airport, we walked everywhere (up and down the strip every day) to save on transportation costs. It also allowed us to explore and see much more than we would have otherwise.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Joey and I each had one bag – at first it seemed like it would be impossible to pack everything we needed into this bag considering we knew it was going to be quite cold (in the 40’s) in Vegas and we needed to pack clothing accordingly. But it actually turned out to be a great fit. This bag is actually 18″L by 10″H by 10″W, so we had to pack lightly within to be able to fit it comfortably into Spirit’s 16″ long “tester box”. And obviously we could have bought the perfect bag to maximize our height and width allowance – there is a bag that was specifically made with Spirit’s personal item dimensions available on Amazon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Then I used my Barclaycard to and redeemed points for this $38 purchase. “Million and millions of people have flocked through the doors of Madame Tussauds London since they first opened over 200 years ago. Madame Tussauds opened its doors in the heart of Sin City in Las Vegas in the year of 1999. There are many reasons for this enduring success, but at the heart of it all is good, old fashioned curiosity. Today visitors are sent on a unique journey through the realms of history, power and fame. The museum-style ropes and poles have gone so guests can truly get up close and personal with A-list celebrities, sports legends, political heavyweights and historical icons, reliving times, events and moments that made the world talk about them.” Tickets are normally $29.95 each Savings: $59.90</image:caption>

<image:caption>WE ARE THE ELMORES. In 2023, we sold all of our belongings in the U.S. to start Our Tiny Adventure around the world. We are travel enthusiasts, content creators, visual storytellers and parents of two little explorers, who love to work hard and play hard. We believe in the transformative power of travel, especially with kids, as it expands their horizons and education through worldschooling. Our mission is global: to inspire people to step out of their comfort zones, pursue their dreams, and live with intention. Through our YouTube channel and social media platforms, we share our journey, adventures, challenges, and triumphs, aiming to ignite the spark of wanderlust and curiosity in others. Join us as we explore the world, learn from different cultures, and embrace the beauty of living life on the road.</image:caption>
